Society of Asian Lawyers at the SRA Compliance Officers Conference 2025

The Society of Asian Lawyers (SAL) was delighted to attend the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s Compliance Officers Conference 2025 in October.

Our President, Muntech Kaur, and Committee Member, Sonya Kalyan, thoroughly enjoyed meeting so many of you throughout the day. It was a fantastic opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations about the challenges you face, the successes you have achieved and the ways in which SAL continues to support its members through representation, networking and community engagement.

Focus on Compliance

This event served as an important reminder of the critical role that compliance plays within our profession. Firms continue to face a wide range of regulatory challenges; from anti-money laundering requirements and client-care standards to managing risks around cyber security, supervision and the fair treatment of staff and clients.

Compliance is not a once-a-year exercise; it is an ongoing commitment that must be woven into daily practice. The SRA emphasised the importance of maintaining clear processes, good governance and a culture where compliance is embraced at every level of the organisation. These are issues that affect firms of all sizes, and we know many of our members, especially those in small and medium-sized practices, feel these pressures largely.

We’re here for our Members

SAL encourages our members to reach out if they have concerns, challenges or questions around regulatory compliance. Whether you’re navigating new requirements, seeking guidance or simply looking to share your experiences, we welcome the conversation. Supporting our community includes helping members feel informed, empowered and connected to the resources they need.

We look forward to continuing this dialogue throughout the year and to representing your views in our ongoing engagement with the SRA and other key stakeholders.

Strengthening Relationships and Representation

The conference also allowed us to further our ongoing engagement with the SRA on behalf of our members. We were pleased to meet with Sian Hughes and Raj Uppal to discuss shared priorities and continue our collaborative work to ensure the voices of Asian lawyers are heard and represented at the highest levels.

It was equally uplifting to reconnect with fellow organisations including The Law Society Charity, Black Solicitors Network, Society of British Bangladeshi Solicitors and Sikhs in Law, as well as to meet new delegates and old friends such as Jabeer Miah, Sukhjit Ahluwalia and Kenny Singh Bhogal.

Competition Winners

This year saw a record number of entries to our annual conference competition. A huge thank you to everyone who took part! Our lucky winners, selected by Sian Hughes, each received a pair of tickets to the 30th Asian Legal Awards. We were thrilled to hear that they had an amazing time celebrating excellence and achievement within the legal sector.
